Stars & Gas in the Galaxy Pair IIZw 70/71

چکیده
II Zw 71 (UGC 9562) was classified as a " probable " polar-ring galaxy in the Polar-Ring Catalog ((Whitmore et al. 1990)), based upon its optical appearance. We present 21 cm and optical observations of this galaxy and its companion, the blue star-forming dwarf II Zw 70. Our 21 cm observations show that 5 × 10 8 solar masses of H I is present in a polar ring orbiting II Zw 71, and show a spatially and kinematically contiguous streamer with 2.5 × 10 8 solar masses of H I gas between the two galaxies. This gaseous bridge, plus our observations of Hα line emission in the polar ring and in II Zw 71, are strong evidence for an ongoing interaction between the two galaxies. However, the configuration of the streamer suggests that the polar ring itself may well have predated the current interaction, which then stimulated an outburst of star formation in the ring gas. – 2 –

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملساخت و تحلیل فهرست ستارهای از کهکشان M33
In this study, 1200 images and catalogues of M33 spiral galaxy taken by WFCAM camera at UKIRT telescope in J, H and K bands. Cross correlation methods were employed to identify stars in overlapping regions from among images taken in different dates. Careful astrometric and photometric analysis was made to calibrate stellar positions and magnitudes using their 2MASS near infra red survey. The fi...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملThe effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملA Comprehensive View of a Strongly Lensed Planck-associated Submillimeter Galaxy
We present high-resolution maps of stars, dust, and molecular gas in a strongly lensed submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at z = 3.259. HATLAS J114637.9−001132 is selected from the Herschel-Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) as a strong lens candidate mainly based on its unusually high 500 μm flux density (∼300 mJy). It is the only high-redshift Planck detection in the 130 deg2 H-ATLAS...
